While MySpace was around before Facebook, it seems that Facebook has taken the lead in online social networking. Last month MySpace only had 124 million visitors and while that is still a lot, Facbook nearly doubled that with 276 million visitors last month. While MySpace is a little bit more customizable with design, it almost comes off looking more like a site for middle schoolers at times. On the other hand, Facebook tends to have a much cleaner layout which appeals more to the older generations using online social netwokring.

After hearing that Facebook had saved someone from jail, I was curios to see if Facebook had put anyone in jail. It turns out one woman was jailed for not a message, not a status update, not even a picture, but a poke. A woman who had an order form a Tennessee court not to contact someone by any means had poked the person. She is now facing up to a month in jail and $2500 fine. Who knew that a Facebook poke could wind up putting someone in jail?

While many people post Facebook updates simply to let others know what they’re up to, one man would probably have never guess that his status update would later prove his innocence in a court of law. A New York City teen who was arrested on robbery charges seemed to have no evidence to prove his alibi that he was actually miles away from the scene of the crime when it happened until his lawyer mentioned that he had updated his status at the same time. The court later subpoenaed Facebook for their records and after checking the IP address, found that the teen was indeed where he said he was, no where near the crime scene. Maybe some of us should start posting status updates more frequently.
